Some Dos and Don’ts when in Sri Lanka

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

If it’s your first time here or even if you’re a returning visitor, the following list might provide you with some useful tips for your visit in Sri Lanka:

DOs

DON’Ts

DO try our local cuisine but beware of the spiciness!

DON’T visit temples and places of worship in shorts, sleeveless tops etc. - best wear jeans, long skirts/dresses or carry a shawl with you

DO keep an eye out on your belongings, especially when travelling out of Colombo

DON’T take selfies with Buddha statues or take photos with your back to a Buddha statue (it’s considered disrespectful in the local culture)

DO try out some King Coconut - it’s amazingly refreshing and packed with nutrients (helps with a hangover too!)

DON’T travel by three-wheelers (tuks) often as it’s not very safe and they can overcharge you by quite a big amount - we recommend you have a Sri Lankan with you when travelling by tuk, check if the tuk has a meter or get someone to negotiate a price for you before getting into one

DON’T walk about too much in the sun, especially in the afternoons as it’s super hot and you could get sunstroke!

DON’T underestimate travel distances in Sri Lanka: a few kilometers can take a long time to cover - have a chat with our Travel Desk to map out your trip here

DON’T drink tap water: Always have water from a filter or have bottled water
